Further Orientation Information to Tasmania

Much thought has been given to the best way for us to provide the most up to date orientation information to International Medical Graduates who have recently arrived in Tasmania. We are providing online information which will enable readers to further research topics they have a particular interest in. This information is provided solely on the basis that readers will be responsible for making their own decisions about the content.

The DoctorConnect website is an Australian Government initiative. This website has been developed by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing for doctors trained outside of Australia and Australian medical employers.

If you haven't already done so you will need to register with the Australian Taxation Office for a Tax File Number

Driving in Tasmania

Permanent visa holders may drive in Tasmania for up to 3 months iftheir foreign licence is current and they carry their driver licence while driving.

If the foreign driver licence is not in English then the person must carry an International Driving Permit or a translation into English by an accredited translator (The licensee is responsible for the expenses involved in getting their licence translated).

Persons holding a temporary visa, ie student/working/holiday visas, do not need to obtain a Tasmanian Licence for the duration of their visa provided their foreign driver licence remains current - Licence must be in English or translated.
