PMIT Bridging Courses

PMIT is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services to provide AMC Clinical Exam preparation courses for Overseas Trained Doctors working within the Tasmanian Public Hospital System.
We do however often have extra places available which can be taken by OTDs residing in other Australian States.
We would not recommend that doctors residing in other countries attend this 1 day course, as there is a lot of organising and expense involved in getting to Tasmania. PMIT is unable to assist with visas, english language tests, flights or accommodation when OTDs attend the AMC Clinical Exam preparation course.

These popular courses are held every 3 to 4 months and are held in the state's public hospitals. There are a number of aspects to the program:

  • Clinical Skills: Two interactive workshops are held focussing on clinical and communication skills. These have been popular in the past and focus on common clinical situations.
  • Practice AMC Clinical Exam: an 8 station replica of the AMC clinical exam, covering different types of questions. The stations are constantly evolving to match changes in the AMC exam itself. Participants divide into 3 groups and rotate through one exam and two teaching sessions.
  • AMC Feedback Session: the facilitator walks through each OSCE with the group providing feedback from the mornings' activities, covering the group's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Individual written feedback: each candidate receives individual written feedback from all examiners approximately two weeks after the exam.

Bridging Course Information
The PMIT OTD practice AMC clinical exams are a multi-station assessment of clinical skills. The practice exam includes an assessment of a candidate's ability to take a history, conduct a physical examination and, by integration of the information obtained, engage in a reasonable discussion of the diagnosis and management. The practice exam will also focus on a candidate's ability to communicate effectively with patients both in the eliciting of symptoms and in counseling on health care, as well as proficiency in clinical skills.

These AMC Clinical Preparation Courses are very popular so enrol early as numbers are limited.
Each course the participant numbers may vary slightly depending on examiner and venue availability.
Due to the popularity of these courses we are currently exploring further options to enable us to increase candidate numbers. One option which we have trialled successfully is the introduction of observers who accompany candidates through all stations.
Please take the time to indicate on your enrolment form your preference to sit the practice exam componenet of the day as a candidate, share stations or observe.
Recent feedback indicates that those doctors who participate in the course as observers also gain much useful and valuable knowledge to assist them in their AMC Clinical preparation.
Priority to attend the course as a sitting candidate will be given to those doctors who have imminent AMC exams.
