PMCT Bridging Courses
PMCT provides Clinical Bridging Courses for International Medical Graduates to assist them with their AMC Clinical Exam preparation. Each course now has offers 54 places to working IMGs - 27 from Tasmania and 27 from other Australian states.
We would not recommend that doctors residing in other countries attend this 1 day course, as there is a lot of
organising and expense involved in getting to Tasmania. PMCT is unable to assist with visas, english language tests,
flights or accommodation when IMGs attend the AMC Clinical Exam preparation course.
These popular courses are held every 3 to 4 months and are held in the state's public hospitals. There are a number of
aspects to the program:
- Clinical Skills: Two interactive workshops are held focussing on clinical and consultation skills. These have been popular in the past and focus on common clinical situations.
- Practice AMC Clinical Exam: an 9 station replica of the AMC clinical exam, covering different types of questions. The stations are constantly evolving to match changes in the AMC exam itself. All participants have a partner during this component of the course. You and your partner move through all OSCE stations together either doing or watching. This give both doctors the opportunity to actively participate in 4 stations each and also observe your partner for 4 stations.
- AMC Feedback Session: the facilitator walks through each OSCE with the group providing feedback from the mornings' activities, covering the group's strengths and weaknesses.
- Individual written & video feedback: each candidate receives individual written feedback from all examiners and roleplayers approximately three weeks after the exam. We are also trialling the provision of video footage to all candidates of themselves performing in 1 OSCE station (doing this has resulted in some fee increases)
- Course fee:
$220 - For those IMGs working within the Tasmanian Public Health System
$660 - If you are currently employed elsewhere
- Course duration:
The course is for one day only and runs between 8.30am - 5pm.

Frequently Asked Questions about PMCT Bridging Courses |
- Why is the course fee different for Tasmanian doctors employed by the DHHS, than for those doctors from elsewhere?
PMCT has been contracted by the State Government to provide educational support services for IMGs working within the state public hospital system. We are more than happy to welcome doctors from elsewhere in Tasmania and also Interstate, but must therefore make a small charge to cover our costs.
- What is the course cost for doctors not employed by the Tasmanian Public Hospital System ?
$660.00 per candidate per day
- Why the price increase ?
We are currently trialling the provision of video footage to all candidates of 1 OSCE station at the bridging course they attend. Another excellent learning opportunity - this does however come with some associated costs. We have increased the station numbers to now incorporate a total of 9 stations. There are associated costs in doing this also.
- How long is the course ?
Currently the PMCT IMG Bridging Courses are 1 day courses consisting of an 9 station Practice Clinical OSCE style exam and 2 concurrent teaching sessions. We have previously run longer courses weekend courses but after considering candidate feedback from previous courses, have reduced the length of the course to 1 day. (Candidate feedback indicated that the Practice AMC Clinical exam was the main reason for attending the course)
- Why are there only 9 stations instead of 20 as in the real AMC exam ?
There are several reasons for this. It requires a large amount of preparation, planning and expense to stage a practice clinical exam: even one with only 9 stations. New questions need to be written and examiners must be found from our pool of locally available doctors.
Increasing numbers of IMGs who are wishing to attend our courses. By keeping the number of stations at 9, we are able to run three concurrent sessions and therefore accept up to 54 participants for each course.
The concurrent sessions approach allows us to provide focussed teaching that is directly relevant to passing the OSCE stations. These teaching sessions are as helpful as the practice exam in preparing for the real AMC clinical exam.
- Why are there only 4 courses per year ?
The answer to this question is similar to that for question 2. It takes a lot of time and effort to put on one of these courses. All of us have other jobs that compete for our time ! We have a limited pool of doctors who are able to contribute as teachers and examiners, and they too have other clinical and teaching duties. We simply do not have the capacity to put on additional courses. Bare in mind that until a year ago there were only 3 courses per year each accepting 15 - 20 participants. We have increased our capacity significantly such that we can now provide 4 courses per year and accept 54 participants on each course.
- What does 'share stations' during the practice exam component of the day mean ? (All course participants have a partner during this component)
There are now a total of 9 stations in this practice exam (8 working and 1 rest). You and your partner move through all OSCE stations together either doing or watching. This gives both doctors the opportunity to actively participate in 4 stations each and also observe your partner for 4 stations. (Another excellent learning opportunity)
- How do I enrol in a PMCT IMG Bridging Course ?
Information about upcoming courses is circulated as soon as it comes to hand by:
- PMCT Website
- Emailed to any doctors who have registered their interest by previously completing an "Expression of Interest" which is on the home page of the PMCT Website
- Circulated to Tasmanian IMGs employed by the Tasmanian public hospital system
To enrol, simply email, fax or post a completed enrolment form to Sandy as per the enrolment process instructions on page 2 of the enrolment form.
We are trialling the introduction of "Direct Debit" for a payment option. If you would like to take up this option, simply tick the direct debit box on page 2 of the enrolment form, forward your enrolment form to Sandy, and we will send you an invoice. You can still forward a cheque or money order if you would prefer.
- Please Note: Full payment needs to be received by us before we can offer you a place. Once payment has been received we will forward to you an electronic letter of enrolment and receipt. Hard copies of your enrolment confirmation letter, invoice/receipt and an 'attendance certificate' will be issued to you at the completion of the course.
- Why do I have to pay before my place is confirmed ?
It's not because we a money-grabbers ! It is simply that we have had previous experiences with doctors who have promised to pay on the day and then not even turned up to the course ! This selfish behaviour obviously deprives others of the chance to attend the course. The payment up front approach helps us to guarantee the best use of available places.
