Welcome to the website for the Postgraduate Medical Institute of Tasmania Inc.

The Postgraduate Medical Institute of Tasmania Inc. (PMIT) was established in 1998 as a non-profit organisation. It is largely funded by the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services and reports to the Minister for Health via the Deputy Secretary , Acute Health Services.

The PMIT is responsible for the education of doctors in their early postgraduate years (PGY1 to PGY3) and the accreditation of training sites and training posts for junior doctors in Tasmania.

In addition, the Institute has a robust Overseas Trained Doctor program which provides advice and support to overseas – trained doctors working within the state's public hospital system. In Tasmania overseas trained doctors (OTDs) contribute significantly to the provision of medical services and patient care in the Tasmanian public hospital system where around 25% of the resident medical staff are OTDs. Tasmania's reliance on an overseas trained medical workforce exceeds that of most other states.

The PMIT has strong links with the University of Tasmania Faculty of Health Sciences, the Medical Council of Tasmania, and the 3 Tasmanian public hospitals.

The PMIT employs Medical Education Officers (MEOs) and Directors of Clinical Training (DCTs) at each Hospital to ensure the appropriate education, supervision and support for prevocational doctors in the hospital system.

The Institute is also an active participant in the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Councils in Australia, thus facilitating close collaboration between the States in early postgraduate medical education.
